For those of you using synthetic dyes and mixing up dyestock in advance, how long do you tend to keep it around? I'm guessing that conditions and time could degrade a solution's usefulness, although I might be using my solutions before it becomes an issue.

Seems like every book out there has something different to say about these matters! Probably as many opinions as there are dyers. :)

I tend to think a week. I have used some stock solutions after a week, but they are not nearly as potent as before. (MX dyes)

Most of mine stay in powder form until I need them. I usually don't like mixing them too far in advance. Once you have activated the dyes, they exhaust in about 24 hours. I have used MX dyes for silk too, and it works well.

I don't remember about H or acid dyes, as when I used them in school we were constantly using up our stock solutions and never let them sit long. Of course, natural dye stock (after boiling) should be kept in the fridge.

I actually have a bachelor's degree in textiles, so I took many fiber classes. (Strangely enough, I am going to start my Information Science program this fall- so I will have something else in common with you when I finish!) I learned to do things by the book there, and I now know when to break the rules. Well, generally. lol ;) For me, whatever gets the job done is good.

Thanks for starting this community, btw!
